New Zealand allocates $32.8m for 10 schools to expand classrooms

New Zealand Education Minister Erica Stanford has announced a $32.8 million investment to provide 34 additional classrooms and a new gym for ten schools facing significant roll growth pressure. The funding is being sourced from savings generated through more efficient planning and delivery within the school property portfolio, which has reportedly yielded over $330 million in savings since July 2024.

The infrastructure projects are distributed across Auckland, Waikato, Taranaki, and Canterbury. Specific recipients include Botany Downs Secondary College, which will receive eight classrooms, and Massey High School, which will gain six classrooms plus four satellite learning support classrooms for Arohanui Special School. Other schools receiving upgrades include Avondale Primary, Berkley Normal Middle, Gilberthorpe, Takanini, Te Waka Unua, and Waitara High.

Construction for a new gym at Chapel Downs Junior College is expected to begin in April 2027, with a target completion date in mid-2028. To ensure efficient delivery, the government plans to utilize standard designs and offsite manufacturing, with work on the reprioritized projects scheduled to commence within the next 12 months.
