New Zealand and Canada communities prepare for earthquake drills

Communities in New Zealand and Canada are preparing for regional earthquake and tsunami preparedness drills.

In New Zealand, the Whakatāne District Council is promoting the ShakeOut national drill scheduled for Wednesday, 21 October at 1:30 pm. The exercise encourages residents, schools, and workplaces to practice the ‘Drop, Cover, and Hold’ procedure. A specific focus for Whakatāne is helping citizens familiarize themselves with new tsunami evacuation maps and signage to ensure they can exit ‘blue zones’ safely.

In British Columbia, Canada, the District of Sooke is encouraging residents and businesses to participate in the Great B.C. ShakeOut on 15 October at 10:15 am. Participants are advised to practice the ‘drop, cover, and hold on’ technique for at least 60 seconds. The drill also serves as an opportunity for individuals to review emergency supplies, secure heavy furniture, and plan communication strategies for families in the event of an emergency.
