New Zealand animal welfare committee faces conflict of interest claims

The animal rights organization SAFE has raised concerns regarding a potential conflict of interest within New Zealand’s National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC). The issue arose after NAWAC confirmed that committee member Sandra Faulkner will remain in her position despite being elected as Vice President of Federated Farmers, the country’s largest farming lobby group.

SAFE Campaign Manager Emily Hall argued that the presence of senior leadership from a major agricultural lobby on an advisory body intended to provide independent advice to the government undermines the committee’s credibility. While NAWAC was established under the Animal Welfare Act to offer impartial guidance, Federated Farmers actively campaigns for policy and regulatory outcomes that impact the commercial use of animals.

Following inquiries to NAWAC Chair Dr. Matthew Stone, the committee confirmed Ms. Faulkner’s continued membership. SAFE maintains that the situation goes beyond standard interest declarations, questioning whether the public can trust the independence of animal welfare advice when committee members hold influential roles in groups advocating for farming interests.
