New Zealand announces performance-based funding for GP clinics

New Zealand Health Minister Simeon Brown has announced new funding aimed at rewarding general practitioner (GP) clinics that achieve specific health outcomes. As part of the 2026/27 general practice package, $67.3 million is available this year for quality improvement and performance, with $40 million specifically tied to meeting targets.

To qualify for this funding, clinics and Primary Health Organisations (PHOs) must meet or show progress toward several key benchmarks by June 30, 2027. These targets include ensuring 90 per cent of enrolled children are fully immunised at eight and 24 months, achieving an 80 per cent rate for up-to-date cervical screenings in enrolled women, and offering smoking cessation support to 25 per cent of current smokers. Additionally, the initiative encourages the implementation of approved patient portals to facilitate online appointment booking and information access.
