New Zealand announces regional aviation support and new planning laws
The New Zealand Coalition Government has announced up to $30 million in concessionary loans from the Regional Infrastructure Fund to support at-risk regional air routes. Regional Development Minister Shane Jones and Associate Transport Minister James Meager stated the funding aims to stabilize small passenger airlines facing rising costs and post-COVID disruptions, ensuring vital connectivity for healthcare, education, and business in remote areas.
In legislative news, the Planning Act and Natural Environment Act have received Royal assent. These laws replace the Resource Management Act 1991, signaling a transition to a new national planning system intended to manage land and environmental development while unlocking economic growth.
Additionally, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon paid tribute to the late former Labour MP and Speaker of the House, Adrian Rurawhe. Luxon described Rurawhe as a highly respected figure known for his fairness and calmness within Parliament.
