New Zealand Aviation Action Plan reaches 15 key milestones

The New Zealand Government has reported significant progress on its Aviation Action Plan, completing 15 of its 25 priorities within the first year of implementation. Associate Transport Minister James Meager stated the progress reflects a collaborative effort between the government and the aviation industry to stabilize and modernize the sector.

Key achievements include funding to transform RNZAF Base Ohakea into a 24/7 alternative airport for wide-body aircraft by mid-2027, which involves active staff recruitment and training. The plan has also addressed regional connectivity by providing concessionary loans to small airlines and investing in interlining arrangements.

To address workforce and training needs, the government is working with the Aviation Council on industry-led recommendations and assisting flight schools in aligning pilot training with airline requirements. Additionally, an accelerated programme is underway to modernize civil aviation rules, aiming to compress 20 years of necessary changes into a two-year period. This includes reforms to reduce red tape for regional airports.

Future efforts will focus on the remaining 10 actions, including assessing infrastructure needs for jet fuel and electricity for next-generation aircraft, and developing a voluntary passenger rights charter to provide greater clarity for travelers.
