New Zealand advance voting begins for general election

Advance voting has commenced across New Zealand ahead of the general election scheduled for November 7. On the first day, 207 voting locations opened, with more than 2,300 sites expected to be operational on election day. Voting locations include community halls, schools, and marae, with over 220 dedicated Māori community voting places available.

The election is expected to be closely contested under the mixed-member proportional system. Current polling shows a narrow margin between Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s centre-right National Party and Chris Hipkins’ centre-left Labour Party. Smaller parties, including the Greens, ACT, NZ First, and the emerging Opportunity party, may hold significant influence in forming a coalition government.

A major point of contention in this cycle is the recent change to electoral laws, which closed voter enrolment on October 25. Unlike previous elections, voters can no longer enrol or update their details during the voting period. Critics and opposition leaders have argued that this change creates structural barriers that could disproportionately affect young people, renters, and Māori communities.
