New Zealand begins flood warning system upgrades in 10 regions
Construction has commenced on flood early warning system upgrades across 10 regions in New Zealand. The project is funded by a $7.7 million investment from the Regional Infrastructure Fund (RIF) to enhance flood resilience.
The upgrades involve installing and improving monitoring infrastructure, such as river level sensors, flow gauges, telemetry equipment, and surveillance cameras. These improvements aim to provide real-time data to help councils, emergency services, and communities respond more effectively to severe weather and deteriorating conditions.
Environment Canterbury is coordinating the project on behalf of the participating councils, which include Waikato, Taranaki, Greater Wellington, Tasman District, Nelson City, Marlborough District, Environment Canterbury, Otago, West Coast, and Environment Southland. The funding model consists of a 60 percent contribution from the Crown and 40 percent co-funding from the local councils.
Additionally, $2.10 million is being invested into the development of a national platform designed to assist central and local governments in prioritizing and making informed decisions regarding future flood resilience investments.
