New Zealand Budget 2026 Overlooks General Practice Funding

The 2026 New Zealand Budget allocates more than $3 billion to health spending, covering hospital costs, ambulance services, Pharmac, cancer care and digital health initiatives. However, the General Practice Owners Association (GenPro) says the budget contains virtually no investment for the country's struggling network of general practices.

GenPro Chair Dr Angus Chambers warned that primary healthcare is barely mentioned and that the omission will increase pressure on clinics, doctors and patients. He highlighted workforce shortages, rising demand and rapidly increasing costs, noting that without funding, patients may be forced into emergency departments, further straining the health system. The budget targets 53,000 additional general practice enrolments but provides no direct support for practices to absorb those patients or expand capacity.

GenPro urges the government to invest in primary care, emphasizing its role in prevention, long‑term condition management and reducing hospital demand.
