New Zealand Crown settles Treaty claims with Ngāti Ruapani

The New Zealand Crown has reached a historic Treaty settlement with Ngāti Ruapani mai Waikaremoana following the final reading of legislation in Parliament. The settlement addresses historical grievances in the Waikaremoana district, including the use of scorched earth policies against Ngāti Ruapani kāinga and aggressive tactics used to acquire land blocks.

The redress package includes a $24 million financial and commercial settlement, the return of several cultural redress properties, and the addition of approximately 12,000 hectares to Te Urewera. The settlement aims to support the iwi’s vision for cultural revitalisation, economic development, and the shared stewardship of Te Urewera.
