New Zealand delivers over 3,000 social homes in Auckland
Housing Minister Chris Bishop said the New Zealand Government has fulfilled its 2023 election pledge to add at least 3,000 social homes in Auckland, reporting a net increase of 3,034 homes by the end of June 2026. The delivery was led by Kāinga Ora, which built 1,824 homes, and Community Housing Providers, which supplied the remaining 1,210.
Around 60 % of the new units are one‑ or two‑bedroom properties and roughly three‑quarters are located in South and West Auckland. The Auckland milestone is part of a broader national effort that has created more than 8,400 additional social‑housing places across New Zealand since November 2023. Further funding for over 4,500 homes and affordable rentals has been secured through the 2024‑2026 budgets and the Flexible Fund.
