New Zealand denies EU associated membership talks

New Zealand has denied that it has held any discussions with the European Union regarding potential associated membership. A spokesperson for New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters clarified that no such talks have taken place, following comments from European officials.

The clarification comes after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced plans to pave the way for Canada to become the first ‘associated member’ of the EU. This initiative aims to strengthen ties with allies in a ‘hostile world,’ focusing on sectors such as trade, defense, artificial intelligence, energy, and critical raw materials.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola suggested that Australia and New Zealand could potentially follow Canada’s lead in deepening their relationships with the EU. While Metsola noted that various global partners are seeking closer cooperation, New Zealand officials emphasized that no formal procedures or negotiations have commenced.
