New Zealand diaspora experts call for overseas electorates

Experts are calling for New Zealand to establish overseas electorates to better represent its significant diaspora. With approximately one million New Zealanders living abroad—roughly 16 percent of the population—advocates argue that the current system fails to capture the political involvement of a group that is among the largest in the OECD.

Paul Spoonley, a senior fellow at the Koi Tū Centre for Informed Futures, suggests New Zealand could adopt models used by countries like Ireland, which utilizes a diaspora strategy and a dedicated minister to engage citizens abroad. Currently, the Electoral Commission reports that nearly 119,000 overseas citizens are registered to vote, marking a nearly 50 percent increase from three years ago.

Organizations such as Kea, the Kiwi Expat Association, emphasize that the diaspora possesses skills and experience that could benefit the country if better engagement channels were provided. Some advocates have also suggested the creation of specific Māori electorates for overseas residents, particularly in Australia.
