New Zealand district mayors propose unified unitary authority

The mayors of the Timaru, Mackenzie, Waimate, and Waitaki districts have submitted a joint proposal to the New Zealand Government under the Head Start programme. The plan seeks to establish a single unitary authority to manage one of the country’s most economically significant regions.

The proposed region would encompass the districts of Waitaki, Waimate, Mackenzie, Timaru, and Ashburton. It covers a diverse area stretching from Aoraki/Mount Cook to the Pacific coast, including the Waitaki Valley hydro schemes, major agricultural lands, and prominent tourism destinations.

Timaru District Mayor Nigel Bowen stated the proposal is a long-term vision designed to ensure local government is as capable as the region it serves. Mackenzie District Mayor Scott Aronsen added that the collaboration aims to secure better services and stronger representation for smaller and rural communities.
