New Zealand economy grows 0.2 percent in June quarter

New Zealand's economy grew by 0.2 percent in the June quarter, according to Stats NZ, marking a slowdown from the 0.9 percent growth recorded in the March quarter. While business groups like BusinessNZ note signs of resilience—such as the BNZ-BusinessNZ Performance of Services Index returning to expansion at 50.6—labor advocates express concern over the uneven distribution of growth.

Sandra Grey, President of the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions (NZCTU), stated that the recovery has not reached working people. She noted that GDP per capita remains 1.5 percent below levels from three years ago. Economic data shows that while annual average growth in operating surplus and mixed income reached 7.4 percent, employee compensation grew by only 2.7 percent.

Labor market indicators show rising pressure, with unemployment at 5.6 percent and underutilisation at 13.8 percent. Long-term unemployment has reportedly increased by 150 percent since 2023. Additionally, the construction sector has seen a significant decline, with output down nearly 10 percent compared to the same quarter three years ago.
