New Zealand education reforms and infrastructure expansion

New Zealand Education Minister Erica Stanford has highlighted the government's progress in education reform and school infrastructure. Stanford noted that National's focus on basics and evidence-based reforms has led to improvements in phonics results, rising from 36 to 58 percent, alongside gains in Year 6 mathematics and writing.

Regarding school infrastructure, the government has implemented a new approach to classroom construction using offsite methods and repeatable designs. This strategy has reportedly reduced the cost per classroom from approximately $1.2 million to $650,000. The government has invested roughly $2.7 billion in school property across three budgets, funding nearly 1,400 additional learning spaces.

As part of these developments, eight new classrooms were recently opened at Northcross Intermediate in Auckland to accommodate school roll growth. Additionally, the government has increased maintenance funding by $880 million and is investing in specialist education, including the funding of three new specialist schools.
