New Zealand Election Updates: Māori Roll Deadline and NZ First Candidate Nomination

Labour Party candidate Kerrin Leoni urged Māori voters to verify their electoral roll before the Māori Electoral Option deadline at midnight on 6 August. She highlighted that the decision will affect Māori representation for the next three years, noting that 302,096 voters are now on the Māori roll, while turnout among Māori remains below the national average.

In a separate development, Napier City Councillor Te Kira Lawrence was announced as New Zealand First’s candidate for the Napier electorate after the resignation of the previous nominee. Lawrence brings experience from local government, health, business and architecture, and will contest the seat against National’s Katie Nimon as the party expands its candidate slate ahead of the 2026 general election.
