New Zealand energy certainty needed to halt deindustrialisation

Energy Market Authority (EMA) head of advocacy Alan McDonald warned that New Zealand’s shift from reliable, affordable power to high‑cost, uncertain supply is driving factory closures and deterring investment. He said the country must adopt a long‑term, bipartisan energy plan that secures generation, upgrades transmission and adds firming capacity for dry years and peak demand.

The EMA proposes faster development of renewable sources – wind, solar, hydro and geothermal – and stronger transmission links to connect new generation quickly. Restoring confidence in the power system is presented as essential to retaining key industries, supporting exports and maintaining supply‑chain resilience.
