New Zealand engineering leaders face market uncertainty
Consulting engineering leaders in New Zealand are navigating a period of market uncertainty characterized by shifting project timelines, fee pressures, and talent gaps. A roundtable discussion held in partnership with ACE New Zealand revealed that while demand showed momentum in early 2026, international uncertainty and fluctuating energy costs have since softened market confidence.
Although data from Stats NZ indicates a 21% increase in new dwelling consents compared to the 2024 trough, industry leaders report that the practical reality on the ground remains challenging. Firms are facing delayed project starts, shifting government programs, and increased competition for work. These factors have made resource forecasting difficult for managing directors and CEOs within the architecture and engineering sectors.
