New Zealand environmental reports address oil, gas, and carbon forestry

The Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment (PCE) has released reports addressing environmental impacts in New Zealand, focusing on the oil and gas industry and the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).

Regarding the energy sector, PEPANZ expressed support for the PCE’s findings on hydraulic fracturing and oil and gas exploration. The industry spokesperson stated that while current practices meet high standards, the sector welcomes strengthened regulations concerning well integrity, leak prevention, and waste disposal to ensure environmental and worker safety.

On climate policy, the PCE’s report on the ETS raised concerns that carbon forestry has become an inexpensive alternative for emitters, delaying effective climate action. Federated Farmers has backed these findings, arguing that carbon forestry conversions destroy productive farmland and undermine the economic viability of rural communities. The organization is calling for government action to prevent whole-farm conversions to permanent carbon forestry.
