New Zealand EPA proposes new regulations for treated seed

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) in New Zealand is seeking public feedback on a proposed group standard for treated seed. Treated seeds are those processed to protect against pests and diseases or to enhance growth.

Dr. Fernando Torres-Vélez, General Manager of Hazardous Substances and New Organisms, stated that the proposal aims to ensure consistent regulation for both locally manufactured and imported treated seeds. Currently, seeds treated overseas prior to importation are not subject to regulation, and domestic manufacturing regulations have lacked consistency. The new standard seeks to close this regulatory gap to mitigate potential risks to human health and the environment.

The proposal includes rules for all covered treated seeds, with additional controls for specific seeds based on chemical classifications. It also introduces controls for the aerial application of treated seeds and requires importers to submit annual reports regarding the types and quantities of active ingredients used in seed treatment substances.
