New Zealand expands Skilled Migrant Category visa programme

New Zealand has expanded its Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa framework, offering multiple pathways for skilled foreign professionals to obtain residency. The updated programme allows successful applicants to live, work, and study in the country indefinitely, with the option to include spouses, partners, and dependent children aged 24 or younger.

The revised system introduces three distinct routes to residency, moving beyond a strictly points-based approach to accommodate diverse educational and professional backgrounds. One primary route remains the Points-Based Pathway, which requires applicants to secure six skilled residence points through recognized qualifications, occupational registration, or qualifying income. Additional points may be claimed for skilled work experience gained within New Zealand.

To qualify, applicants must generally be aged 55 or younger and meet specific health, character, and English-language requirements. Candidates must also hold a full-time skilled job or a valid job offer from an accredited New Zealand employer, typically involving at least 30 working hours per week. The application process begins with a no-fee Expression of Interest (EOI), which may lead to an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
