New Zealand faces surge in influenza and respiratory illnesses

New Zealand is experiencing a later-than-usual surge in influenza and other respiratory illnesses, placing significant strain on the national healthcare system. Outbreaks have been reported in schools, childcare centers, and residential care facilities across the country.

In Auckland, severe acute respiratory infection hospitalizations reached “high activity” levels during the week ending August 9, with influenza rates doubling within a single week. The surge has caused extreme pressure on emergency services; Hato Hone St John reported its busiest day on record on August 14, following a period where the ambulance service had to activate its emergency operations center.

Major hospitals, including Wellington Hospital and Middlemore in South Auckland, have reported record-breaking activity levels. Health NZ noted that emergency department presentations increased significantly in mid-August, rising from 13,863 to 15,123 over a three-day period.
