The State Highway 1 Belfast‑to‑Pegasus motorway and Woodend Bypass, a Road of National Significance, was granted Fast‑track approval – the 27th project and second roading project approved through the government’s expedited process. The 11 km expansion runs from south of the Kaiapoi River Bridge to just north of the Pegasus/Ravenwood intersection. Current traffic on SH1 near Woodend is about 21,500 vehicles a day, with roughly nine percent freight, and is projected to rise to 28,000 vehicles a day by 2048. The project is expected to improve safety, cutting annual deaths and serious injuries from 5.6 to 1.25, and to ease congestion, support housing growth in Woodend, Ravenswood and Pegasus, and boost economic development.
