New Zealand First proposes removing fuel emissions tax

The New Zealand First party has announced a policy proposal to abolish the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) tax on transport fuels during its next term of government. The party claims this move would immediately reduce petrol prices by approximately 12 cents per litre and diesel prices by 14 cents per litre.

According to the party, the ETS has cost consumers and businesses an estimated $850 million over the past year through the purchase of carbon credits. New Zealand First argues that these costs place undue pressure on households, farmers, and industries such as freight and manufacturing, where diesel is essential. The proposal comes as the cost of living becomes a central issue ahead of the November 7 general election.
