New Zealand food prices ease as economy recovers, but fuel‑cost surge threatens households

April data show New Zealand food prices were broadly flat, with notable shifts in individual items. Avocados fell 22 % over the past decade and cucumbers dropped 23 % in the last year, while kiwifruit prices surged 93 % over ten years, reflecting strong demand and harvest challenges. Economists warned that recent spikes in diesel, fuel and fertilizer costs – driven by the Iran conflict – could push food inflation higher in the coming months.

At the same time, the wider economy displayed signs of recovery. Regional activity expanded in 12 of 16 areas, and retail spending modestly rose, supported by strong primary‑sector outputs. However, higher fuel and input costs are already pressuring supermarket margins and prompting households to curb discretionary spending, especially on apparel and hospitality. The combined effect creates a mixed outlook for the grocery sector as consumers balance price sensitivity with the need for essential goods.
