New Zealand Foreign Minister faces criticism over remarks

New Zealand Foreign Minister Peteras has faced significant criticism following a verbal outburst in Parliament directed at Xu-Nan, an opposition MP of Chinese descent. During the incident, Peteras told the MP to “go back to where you come from” and claimed he had only recently arrived in the country.

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon addressed the incident, stating that Peteras has a history of making “inappropriate, attention-seeking remarks” intended to draw media focus to himself rather than addressing domestic issues. Former Ambassador Carl Worker also criticized the remarks, suggesting they damage New Zealand’s relationship with China.

In a separate diplomatic development, Peteras suggested that external forces may be involved in a no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands. China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to these implications, stating that such claims are “groundless” and reaffirming China’s principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other nations.
