New Zealand Government orders business case for Waitematā Harbour crossing

The New Zealand Government has ordered a detailed business case to investigate an additional crossing for the Waitematā Harbour in Auckland. The study will evaluate various options, including bridges and tunnels, as well as funding, financing, and delivery models. A further study regarding the Meola Reef option may also be commissioned.

Transport Minister Chris Bishop noted that the existing Auckland Harbour Bridge, completed in 1959, carries 170,000 vehicles daily and supports nearly $1 billion in annual economic activity. However, the corridor faces limitations due to weight restrictions and a lack of dedicated public transport lanes. The government anticipates that without a new crossing, the economic cost of disruption from necessary bridge renewals could reach approximately $4.8 billion.

The project is expected to be a Crown-led initiative overseen by an independent Senior Responsible Officer reporting to the Ministers of Finance, Transport, and Auckland, as well as the Cabinet.
