New Zealand Government to streamline solar panel installations

The New Zealand Government has committed to implementing recommendations from the Ministry for Regulation’s Sector Review Report to streamline solar panel installations. Regulation Minister David Seymour and Energy Minister Simeon Brown stated the goal is to make residential and small-to-medium scale solar installation among the simplest in the developed world.

Proposed changes aim to significantly reduce costs and timelines. For residential solar, approval costs are projected to drop from approximately $640 to $200, with wait times decreasing from three months to six days. For small-to-medium scale installations, such as those on farms, costs could fall from $11,000 to $1,300, and timelines from six months to one month.

The government also plans to legalise plug-in solar systems to provide energy options for renters and apartment dwellers. The Ministry identified that current processes often involve excessive sign-offs and site visits. The reforms are estimated to deliver net benefits between $28 million and $50 million over 10 years through reduced compliance costs and delays.
