New Zealand homes turn to solar panels and winter electricity savings
Rising electricity prices and falling costs of solar components are prompting more New Zealand households to install rooftop solar systems. The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) estimates annual returns of 6‑14 % depending on location – for example, 6‑12 % in Auckland and up to 14 % in Queenstown. Prospective owners should verify roof orientation (north‑west to north‑east), tilt (at least 30°, preferably 45°), and minimise shading. EECA advises sizing systems to match household demand, commonly around 6 kW of panels with a 5 kW inverter, and obtaining detailed quotes that break down panel numbers, inverter type, warranties and projected savings. A voluntary “approved product” list for solar equipment is being developed.
During winter, New Zealand residents face higher power bills, with hot‑water heating accounting for about a third of household consumption. Off‑peak heating of water cylinders and modest use of heat‑pump water heaters can reduce costs. EECA recommends operating heat pumps only when needed rather than continuously, maintaining filters, and keeping indoor temperatures between 18‑22 °C. Simple measures such as turning off standby appliances, using timers for heated towel rails or electric blankets (≈ 4 c per hour), and improving insulation further curb electricity use.
