New Zealand hospitals restrict visitors amid pertussis and influenza surge
New Zealand is facing a dual challenge from a continuing nationwide pertussis (whooping cough) epidemic and a surge in seasonal influenza and RSV cases. The pertussis epidemic, which began in October 2024, has resulted in over 4,800 confirmed or suspected cases, leading to 447 hospitalizations and one death. Infants under one year old are particularly affected, with more than half of the 415 cases in this age group requiring hospital treatment.
In response to the rise in respiratory illnesses, hospitals across the country are implementing restrictive visitor policies. To mitigate the spread of viral pathogens within clinical environments, administrators are limiting patients to a single support person. These measures aim to reduce environmental contamination and protect immunocompromised populations as emergency departments struggle to manage the increased patient load.
