New Zealand implements major student visa policy changes
New Zealand has introduced four significant adjustments to its student visa policies, effective October 27, 2026. A primary change involves the removal of unlimited work rights for new research master’s students; these applicants will now be subject to a standard limit of 25 working hours per week. PhD students, however, will retain their unrestricted work hours.
Other key reforms include an extension of the post-course visa buffer period from one month to two months for certain students, providing more time for transition planning. Additionally, Immigration New Zealand has strengthened English language proficiency assessments, noting that an academic admission does not guarantee visa approval if immigration officers doubt a student's ability to complete their course.
The government is also increasing compliance oversight of educational institutions. If a school or provider is under investigation, the processing of student visa applications related to that institution may be suspended.
