New Zealand increases aerial surveillance in Ross Sea to combat illegal fishing

New Zealand has announced increased aerial surveillance in the Ross Sea to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The New Zealand Defence Force will deploy P-8A Poseidon aircraft during the summer season to detect and deter illegal activities and ensure authorized vessels comply with conservation regulations.

The operation aims to protect one of Antarctica’s most vital marine ecosystems. The Ross Sea is a strategically significant area that is also closely linked to New Zealand’s territorial claim over the Ross Dependency. While the region is subject to the Antarctic Treaty—which prioritizes peaceful and scientific use while suspending sovereignty disputes—the deployment highlights the intersection of environmental protection, state presence, and territorial interests in the remote region.
