New Zealand industry groups urge support for mineral and energy sectors

Industry groups in New Zealand are expressing concern and advocacy regarding the country's mineral and energy policies. Energy Resources Aotearoa has criticized recent changes to the Crown Minerals Act, which will remove the requirement for the Government to promote the exploration and development of Crown minerals.

John Carnegie, Chief Executive of Energy Resources Aotearoa, stated that the move sends a “terrible signal” to investors. He argued that natural gas is essential for supporting a renewable electricity system and that the industry requires significant ongoing investment to maintain energy security and affordability.

Separately, the New Zealand Minerals Council has released an election manifesto calling for government support to grow the mining sector. Chief Executive Josie Vidal highlighted that mineral export earnings have reached $3.1 billion, doubling since 2023. The council is advocating for policies that enable investment and growth to capitalize on increasing international interest in New Zealand's mining resources.
