New Zealand intelligence identifies China as primary source of large-scale espionage

The New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) has identified China as the only country conducting espionage operations ‘on a scale’ against the nation, according to its annual ‘Security Threat Environment 2026 Assessment’.

The report details a specific attempt by the China-based Purple Mountain Observatory to install terrestrial space infrastructure in New Zealand through a local company. The NZSIS suggests the local firm was likely unaware that the equipment could be used to collect military intelligence.

Additionally, the agency warned of more insidious recruitment efforts targeting New Zealand public officials via professional platforms like LinkedIn. These offers, often disguised as academic or consulting opportunities, are viewed as a risk for electoral interference ahead of the November 7 general elections.
