New Zealand intelligence warns of Chinese espionage activities

A recent national security report from the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) has highlighted concerns regarding large-scale espionage and geopolitical interference by the People's Republic of China in the South Pacific.

The analysis indicates that Chinese operations target public institutions, technological research sectors, and diaspora communities. One notable instance involves the Purple Mountain Observatory, a state-linked Chinese astronomical institute, which allegedly attempted to install satellite and space tracking infrastructure in New Zealand through a local company unaware of the operation's military intelligence objectives.

As a member of the ‘Five Eyes’ intelligence alliance, New Zealand is considered a primary target for such activities. The report also notes that Chinese legal frameworks increasingly compel private companies to cooperate with state intelligence services. The Chinese Embassy in Wellington has rejected these allegations, describing them as baseless attempts to destabilize bilateral relations.
