New Zealand economy shows growth in tech and education exports

New Zealand is seeing significant growth across several key economic sectors. The international education export sector has rebounded strongly, with earnings reaching nearly $5 billion in the year to June 2026. This surpasses 2019 pre-pandemic levels, despite total student enrolments being lower than they were before COVID-19. Education Minister Erica Stanford noted that the sector is on track to meet a long-term goal of $7.2 billion by 2034.

In the technology sector, the TIN200 report indicates that New Zealand’s global technology exporters increased revenues by NZ$1.8 billion in 2025. This growth is driven by increasing sector maturity and a currency advantage that supports export competitiveness.

Government investment is also targeting specific community and enterprise developments. Over $3.4 million has been allocated through the Māori Development Fund to support enterprises in green hydrogen, horticulture, and wine production. Additionally, the government is investing $125,000 to support the Pasifika Youth Producers Programme, aimed at providing practical skills and employment pathways for Pasifika youth.

However, economic challenges persist, particularly regarding Māori unemployment. While the rate eased slightly to 10.8 percent in the June quarter, it remains significantly higher than the national unemployment rate of 5.6 percent.
