New Zealand issues new oil and gas exploration licenses

New Zealand is advancing its domestic oil and gas production by issuing new licenses for exploration and production. This move follows previous developments such as the establishment of an LNG terminal and an exploration fund.

Monumental Energy is actively expanding its presence in the Taranaki Basin, having received approval for its own exploration permit. The company has secured a 25% royalty agreement for several drilling operations in the region. Current production from wells such as Waihapa H1, Ngaere 1+2, and Moki 2 exceeds 1,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. Three additional drilling projects—Ngaere 3, Waihapa 4, and Toko 2B—are scheduled to begin in the second half of the year.

The company focuses on rehabilitating former drill sites to achieve rapid production increases with lower risks and costs. The domestic market remains highly attractive for producers, with natural gas prices reaching up to 40 NZD per mcf, approximately five times higher than prices in North America.
