New Zealand Labour Party criticizes nursing staffing shortages

The New Zealand Labour Party has criticized the National government’s hiring freeze, alleging it has caused severe staffing shortages in the healthcare sector. Labour health spokesperson Dr Ayesha Verrall stated that hospitals, including Tauranga, North Shore, Middlemore, and Waitākere, have declared states of emergency due to the lack of staff.

Verrall claimed that the freeze has prevented hospitals from filling vacant positions, leading to delayed treatments for pediatric cancer patients at Starship Hospital and poor conditions for patients. The Labour Party has proposed ending the freeze and guaranteeing jobs for eligible graduate nurses to prevent them from seeking employment in Australia.
