New Zealand launches AI tool for biosecurity standards and expands chemical rules for small‑scale growers

The New Zealand Government is testing a generative‑AI tool to modernise the development of import health standards that protect the country's biosecurity. Minister for Biosecurity Andrew Hoggard said the four‑month pilot will streamline document‑heavy work while keeping key decisions with Biosecurity New Zealand experts, aiming for faster, evidence‑based approvals without compromising safety.

In a related reform, the government is creating a new pathway for growers of minor crops to use internationally‑agreed, risk‑based maximum residue limits (MRLs). The change, also announced by Minister Andrew Hoggard, would let growers such as strawberry producers adopt Codex MRLs—e.g., a higher limit for sulfoxaflor—providing more flexibility, better pest control options and supporting export opportunities.
