New Zealand launches digital tool to combat invasive weeds

The New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC) is launching the Smart Weed Alert Tool (SWAT), a free digital surveillance tool designed to detect emerging invasive weed threats. Developed by DOC expert Dr. Kate McAlpine, the tool aims to address the significant economic and environmental impact of weeds in New Zealand, which currently costs the country more than $1 billion annually in management and lost productivity.

SWAT functions by automatically scanning thousands of daily plant observations to identify signs of new or fast-spreading weeds. By alerting authorities to incursions early, the tool seeks to provide a window for eradication before species become established and difficult to control. The technology has gained international interest and is scheduled to be featured at a biodiversity expo during global climate change talks in Armenia.
