New Zealand launches State Redress Service for abuse survivors

The New Zealand Government has launched the State Redress Service, establishing a single point of contact for survivors of historical abuse in state and faith-based care. The service aims to simplify how survivors access information, submit new claims, or track the progress of existing ones.

Lead Coordination Minister Erica Stanford stated that the service is intended to provide a more consistent approach across various agencies. Previously, survivors often had to navigate multiple organizations and repeatedly recount personal experiences to different entities. Under the new system, survivors with claims involving multiple agencies will be assigned a single case manager to streamline the process.

This initiative follows recommendations from the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care. The introduction of the service does not affect existing claims; those currently being managed will continue through their respective agencies without needing to restart the process.
