New Zealand launches third free online food safety training module

The New Zealand Government has released the third module of its free online food safety training series. Food Safety Minister Andrew Hoggard announced that the new module, titled ‘Maintaining a food safe workplace’, focuses on cleaning, sanitising, pest control, maintenance, storage, and waste management.

Since the launch of the initial modules four months ago, over 7,000 people have accessed the introductory module and more than 3,000 have completed the hygiene module. The initiative aims to reduce costs for food businesses, where training typically ranges from $50 to $200 per staff member, while providing a defense for consumer safety.

The course was developed in collaboration with the Restaurant Association, Hospitality NZ, and various local authorities. Four additional modules covering food handling, allergens, and traceability/recalls are expected to be available by early next year. This program is part of broader regulatory changes intended to simplify food safety processes for businesses of all sizes.
