New Zealand leaders push for innovation and quantum tech growth

New Zealand leaders and industry bodies are pushing for strategic reforms to transform the nation's scientific research into a sustainable innovation economy. The New Zealand Israel Innovation Hub (NZIIH) will host its Annual Leaders’ Luncheon in Auckland on August 26, 2026. The event features keynote speaker Sir Peter Gluckman and panelist David Thodey to discuss how the country can better convert research into economic value and build a technology-driven economy resilient to political cycles.

Simultaneously, the industry body Tech New Zealand has released a manifesto aimed at boosting the domestic quantum and photonics sectors. The group highlights that New Zealand's existing photonics sector generates approximately $1.5 billion in output and employs nearly 5,000 people. To remain globally competitive, the manifesto calls for a coordinated national strategy, increased investment in specialist skills, shared infrastructure, and support for commercialization to ensure the country moves from a consumer of technology to a global contributor.
