New Zealand local councils face rising rates and funding cuts
Local governments in New Zealand are facing financial pressures due to rising costs and shifting central government support. In Auckland, Mayor Wayne Brown has proposed a record 7.9% rates increase, which is expected to generate approximately $322 million in additional revenue. While the Mayor attributes the increase to projects like the City Rail Link, critics note that total rates revenue is projected to rise by 10.5% due to factors including new dwellings and revaluations.
In the Tararua district, a reduction in road funding from the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) is expected to cost the area nearly $1.3 million over three years. The Funding Assistance Rate (FAR) is set to drop from 73 cents to 71 cents per eligible dollar. Tararua Mayor Scott Gilmore stated that the council must now choose between reducing essential road investment or asking ratepayers to cover the shortfall, noting the difficulty of this decision amid government plans to enforce a 4% rates cap on councils by 2029.
