New Zealand NEMA allocates $883,000 to 17 severe‑weather resilience projects

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) announced that its Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Resilience Fund will distribute $883,497 to 17 community projects aimed at preparing for and responding to severe weather across Aotearoa New Zealand. NEMA’s Director of Civil Defence Emergency Management John Price said the grants reflect a rise in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events and support the National Disaster Resilience Strategy’s goal of building a culture of resilience.

Funding will support a range of initiatives, including planning tools for disabled people, frameworks to address post‑emergency family‑violence spikes, business continuity measures, land‑drainage reviews, flood‑modelling for the Awakino River, a multilingual children’s storybook on earthquakes and tsunamis, a Waikato resilience video series, power‑outage community campaigns, and iwi‑led emergency‑preparedness projects such as Ngāti Tamatera.
