New Zealand Nurses Organisation calls for equitable health delivery

The New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) has issued a call for more equitable health services, noting that the current system is based on Western models that can cause cultural alienation for Māori. Kaiwhakahaere Kerri Nuku stated that this alienation often leads Māori to seek healthcare late or avoid it entirely.

Data highlights significant health disparities: Māori are 1.6 times more likely to die from cancer than non-Māori. Additionally, Māori living in the most socioeconomically deprived areas are 2.7 times more likely to develop diabetes than those in the least deprived areas. Similar disparities exist regarding ischaemic heart disease, stroke, chronic kidney disease, COPD, and diabetes.

A Mata-Horizon poll of Māori voters found that 67% of respondents have put off or gone without healthcare in the past year, and nearly one-third do not trust the national healthcare system to provide necessary care. The NZNO also noted that self-harm is the leading cause of years of life lost among rangatahi, signaling urgent mental health needs.
