New Zealand Nurses Organisation disputes nursing recruitment claims

The New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) has challenged claims by National deputy leader Nicola Willis that 2,300 additional hospital nurses are being recruited to start work by Christmas. NZNO President Anne Daniels characterized the government's figures as ‘smoke and mirrors,’ arguing that current recruitment efforts are merely replacing attrition rather than growing the workforce.

According to Te Whatu Ora, just over 300 nurses have recently been hired and are undergoing recruitment, with 1,800 graduates expected to be hired. The organization is currently advertising for approximately 300 additional roles. NZNO notes that while the government promised to hire 1,800 graduates by June 2027, the current data suggests nursing numbers have actually decreased by 120 FTE since March 2025.

Anne Daniels further alleged that a recruitment freeze has resulted in 1,300 nursing roles remaining vacant over the last two years as a cost-saving measure. She also highlighted a decline in graduate placement, stating that only 45% of registered nursing graduates were matched to supported-entry roles at Te Whatu Ora following mid-year exams, compared to a historical rate of up to 90%.
