New Zealand political leaders debate public service and economic policies

New Zealand political leaders are debating divergent approaches to public services, healthcare, and the economy. National leader Christopher Luxon and Labour leader Chris Hipkins have agreed to engage in bipartisan talks regarding infrastructure, AI, and long-term superannuation within the first 100 days of a new government.

Opposition parties are criticizing the National government's policies. The Green Party has pledged to reverse $2.4 billion in public service cuts, arguing that current reductions and the proposed replacement of 8,700 roles with AI have devastated local economies.

In the health sector, the Labour Party is campaigning against National's decision to cap nursing student training, promising instead to guarantee jobs for all eligible New Zealand-trained graduate nurses. Meanwhile, Labour has released an economic plan focused on supporting small businesses through the Elevate program, raising the GST threshold to $80,000, and implementing a targeted capital gains tax.
