New Zealand online casino regulations leave cryptocurrency status unresolved

New Zealand is moving toward a fully licensed online casino system by 2027, but current regulations do not explicitly address the use of cryptocurrencies or stablecoins. While rules prohibit deposit methods involving credit contracts, such as credit cards, they provide no specific approval or prohibition regarding digital-asset payment routes.

Operators preparing license applications face uncertainty regarding how wallets, exchanges, or conversion services will fit into the regulatory framework. Any operator offering crypto payments would still be required to meet general consumer and security standards, including PCI DSS v4.0.1 compliance for payment service providers.

In the recent licensing auction, 11 entities won the right to apply for 15 available licenses, with a final price of NZ$15 million per license. Winning an auction right does not guarantee a final license. Additionally, current rules mandate that customers may only register one deposit method per platform and cannot change it within a 24-hour period, though operators must allow withdrawals via different methods.
